Importance of open-shell effects in adhesion at metal-ceramic interfaces

چکیده
We demonstrate markedly enhanced adhesion between oxide ceramics and conducting metals via promoting open-shell electronic structure at the interface, by using a more covalent oxide or doping with early transition metals. Open-shell character suppresses closed-shell repulsions and permits local covalent and/or donoracceptor bonding, even in the absence of a conventional reaction layer. The dramatic impact of such local bonding attractions, predicted from density-functional calculations, contradicts the idea of classical electrostatic forces dominating metal-oxide adhesion.

Ceramic/metal joining for structures and materials
The paper presents a discussion of the various types of ceramic joining within a conceptual framework based on the fundamentals of wetting, adhesion, and the thermodynamics of interfacial reactions. Examples are given of solid state diffusion bonding of Pt to alumina and brazing of AlN. Most ceramic-metal bonding is conducted at high temperatures, where chemical reaction is to be expected. The ...

The present study aims at investigating stress and deformation behavior of rotating thick truncated conical shells subjected to variable internal pressure. Material prpperties of the shells are graded along the axial direction by Mori-tanaka scheme, which is achieved by elemental gradation of the properties.Governing equations are derived using principle of stsionary total potential (PSTP) and ...

In this article, the prominence has been given to study the influence of skew angle on bending response of functionally graded material shell panels under thermo-mechanical environment. Derivation of governing equations is based on the Reddy’s higher-order shear deformation theory and Sander’s kinematic equations. To circumvent the problem of C1 continuity requirement coupled with the finite el...

We employ first-principles density functional calculations to explore atomic-level interactions and predict the ideal work of adhesion at the SiO2/nickel and ZrO2/SiO2 interfaces. We find that chemical bonding at the interface serves to strengthen significantly interfaces formed with SiO2, which exhibits significant covalent bonding character, relative to those formed using more ionic oxides, s...
